Textbook Assignment #1-Chapter 2

Chapter 2 Summary

Working as a second grade teacher, I would say I am pretty familiar with children’s literature and have seen many picture books, easy reads, and some wordless picture books. However, I am unfamiliar with the middle school/middle grade and young adult literature age group. After watching the video, Divisions of Young People’s Literature, I would say the information revolving around these topics was the most beneficial for me. I had always assumed that any literature that revolved around the middle school grade age group would be okay to have in the library, but I was greatly mistaken. As the video states, there might be certain YA books that I would want to put into my library because they may fall under the middle school grade age of 13; but, they may not be appropriate to have in a middle school library, whether it be because of the topics that are being discussed or the language that is being used in the YA book. For example, as the video states, even though it may be considered a YA book, the language found in Grasshopper Jungle would not be suitable in a middle school library. This information will be useful as I read my YA literature books to determine if the book I am reading would be appropriate to have in a middle school library.
