Chapter 20
Chapter 20 is a link to a School Library Journal (SLJ) article that showcases 23 young adult and middle grade books that honor Hispanic heritage. Being that I live in Laredo, Texas (a border town), knowing of these books can be helpful for me to showcase to the students in my school (especially since the school I work in, and really any school in Laredo, is predominantly Hispanic). I have not read many of the books that were shown in the list, so I liked that the article included a short summary of each book. With this information, it can help me with seeing what purpose the book can be used for. For example, can I use the book when discussing autobiographies? Can the book be used to discuss Hispanic heritage? Also, with each book including a grade level suggestion, it can be helpful for me to know if any of the books could be placed in an elementary setting, or if it is better suited for the secondary level (I did find a couple of books for the elementary level, with the lowest grade level being for 2nd graders). This list can not only be useful for librarians, but should also be used to share with teachers so they can be informed of these Hispanic books. Teachers may be able to incorporate these books into their classroom libraries to offer diverse books, or use them as a classroom read and have purposeful book talks.
