Textbook Assignment #3: Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Growing up, my favorite graphic novels that I enjoyed reading were the Captain Underpants series, and I love seeing the enjoyment my students have when they read graphic novels. This year, I started noticing that more and more of my students are checking out Dog Man books from the library, and they love to share them amongst themselves. It wasn’t until recently that one of my students discovered Captain Underpants, and they were shocked to hear that I grew up reading Captain Underpants and that Dav Pikly is also the author of the Dog Man series. Since my class isn’t the only one that enjoys reading the Dog Man series, these books are almost always checked out, so I always try to show my students other graphic novels so that they can see what else is available to them. For example, as the video, Graphic Novels and CCSS What We Can Learn, mentions, the Baby Mouse and Lunch Lady series are great graphic novels for young readers, and my students are beginning to take notice of these books.

The video discusses various graphic novels that would be great to tie into Common Core State Standards (CCSS) while “book talking” about them. Although my school district does not follow CCSS, I was still able to think about how I could tie in graphic novels with my school district standards, being Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The video gave me a lot of great information on various graphic novels that I now know to keep my eye out for.
