Textbook Assignment #3- Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Realistic fiction is a subgenre that I struggle with understanding and identifying in books. If I read a book that is based on a fiction story, I automatically see it as being fiction and don’t consider if it would fall under the spectrum of realistic fiction. Since I am not sure if I have read any realistic fiction books, I searched for a realistic fiction book list on Good Reads and came across the list titled “Popular Realistic Fiction Books”. When looking through the list of books, I kept the criteria for evaluating this subgenre (that was written in the chapter) alongside me to determine if the books I have read do in fact fall under the umbrella of realistic fiction. The first two books mentioned in the list were The Fault In Our Stars and Wonder (both of which I have read and enjoyed). After looking through the criteria, I can now see why these books are realistic fiction. Both books are set in a real world setting, and the situations and places mentioned in the stories reflect a contemporary world (criteria #1). Both of these books also gradually show the theme throughout the story, and they do not force it onto the reader (criteria #2). Also, both of these stories can be relatable to the readers, addressing sensitive and tough topics.
After reading the criteria that can be used to evaluate realistic fiction, I feel more confident that I can reflect on stories I have read and determine whether it is a realistic fiction story or not. I will keep the three important criteria in mind as I continue to read assigned books in this course and evaluate books for my students and future library.
