Chapter 3 Summary
The Anatomy of a Book chapter dissected and explained the 25 parts that make up a book. These 25 parts were broken up into three main sections: Front Matter, Body Matter, and End Matter. The Front Matter starts with the front cover of a book but can end at different pages depending if the author chooses to add a dedication, acknowledgement, foreword, testimonial, and/or preface page. Another section found in the Front Matter is the table of contents. Following the Front Matter is the Body Matter. The main content found in this section is the main text/body of the text, chapters and/or parts. Other content that can be found in this section are the introduction, prologues, epigraph, half-title page, epilogue, and/or an afterword. Following the Body Matter is the End Matter, which can consist of an appendix, glossary, bibliography, index, and/or a colophon if the book is non-fiction; however, an author of a fantasy book may choose to add a glossary at the end of the book. Two parts found in the End Matter that every book will consist of is the back cover and the spine of a book. After reading through the article, it will allow me to include it in my curriculum to broaden my students’ exposure to learning the parts of a book, whether it be a picture book or a chapter book.
