Chapter 13
Science fiction has to be one of my favorite subgenres of fantasy. Not only did I just learn that science fiction is a subgenre and not a genre, I also never knew about the different categorizations found under science fiction. I have not read many books that would fall under “hard science” science fiction, but I do enjoy Star Wars, so I may start to look into more books that would fall under this category. Many of the books mentioned in the video, Science Fiction: There’s Something for Everyone, were books that I have never heard of, but I am now very interested in reading many of these. I instantly fell in love with the Hunger Games trilogy when I first read them, and after watching the video, I now have other dystopia-categorized recommendations that I will be looking into. Also, while I was reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, I remember thinking “I have no idea what type of world I’m reading about”, and I couldn’t think of what subgenre or category this book would fall under. I now know that because of the characters’ and animals’ ability to hear minds, this book is categorized under extra-sensory perception (another category that I did not know of), and I am also looking forward to reading more books in this category. The video and notes discussed in this chapter have helped me tremendously to better understand this subgenre and understand that there really is a science fiction book for every type of reader.
